Well, it's more of just a question of defining the word. Reading rex's post seems to indicate that MS makes enough money off first party software titles to recoup their hardware losses-- when this is plainly not the case; no analyst would say so. This guy at Red Mercury (who seems to have making PalmOS games as his day job) may not be an expert in the field... but at the moment, the race is hardly a photo finish, and doesn't require an expert to predict a "winner". His column does have a good point-- successive rounds of the PC and OS wars are cumulative because of backward compatibility requirements. Console battles tend to be less so. People are much more willing to give up backwards compatibility for cool new games because games are cheaper to replace than computer applications and peripherals. The PS2 benefits from PS1 compatibility, but it's not a major selling point; the games are. Whereas in the PC space, backwards compatibility with old versions of Windows and DOS are quite frequently a minimum requirement; thus the longer you stick around in the game, the more likely you are to win. What he's saying is, that the strategy always seems to have been, as rex said, "get your foot in the door and then win the next round". What the R-M writer is saying is that each round is separate-- you have to get your foot in all over again. | |
