I believe the whole thing might have gone backwards. 343i obviously had the Didact planned as a villain from the get-go. He was probably meant to be the psychopathic asshole he is in the game all along. When they ask Greg Bear to write a few books as a primer for the game, he ends up writing the Didact as actually having some depth or complexity to his character. I think this is why people are so confused about his portrayal. He was meant to be evil all along, Bear just made him look too rational and noble. Also, it's all sorts of weird that Master Builder is barely in the Halo 4 terminals even though he was supposedly a critical character in that time period. Plus he shows none of the traits he does in the books and doesn't appear to be in any sort of conflict with anyone.
