In Response To: Re: My campiagn gripes *SP* (InnerRayg) : I'm pretty dissatisfied with the whole campaign. It felt forced. Everything - : Cortana's breakdown, the Chief's inner turmoil, the Lasky shit, none of it : felt genuine. It was like every three seconds Cortana would freak out, and : Chief would say "Don't worry, it's fine" and she'd retort : "HOW IS THIS FINE?". One big freak out like that would have been : quite an impact. Hearing it three times in what seemed like a row really : dulled that one. Forced is a good word to describe it - I've been thinking that something felt off about the story overall and I've been struggling to point out exactly what the main reason is. It all just feels so... thoroughly outlandish. Within moments of being woken up in this future version of the Haloverse we're already introduced to the next bad guy and then immediately get to meet a convenient Forerunner counterpart who does something, not sure what exactly, and then the action escalates through the roof and just keeps going without a break or a chance for the characters to really understand what exactly is going on. It's like the game expects the player to have read all the ancillary material but even then, the characters should be asking more questions. Who are these new Spartans? What's the state of the galaxy? What was up with Spark saying "You are Forerunner" since the Forerunners clearly aren't humans? Why are the Elites enemies again? It's like the story arc could've been expanded over the course of at least two games. But I suppose they had to have a high-stakes finale at the expense of pacing. Worse, most of the gameplay feels divorced from the story: most of the time, your objective is to flip a switch or two, which in a story sense is little more than filler between the cutscenes. If the story had been spread out more efficiently over the levels themselves it may have worked more smoothly. But right now, when the gameplay itself barely carries the story forward, what we see of the story seems to be on fast-forward because most of it is conveyed in cutscenes. : But I could forgive that, like I forgive the shoddy design sense whoever was
: Still, I just wish I had a single damn clue what the antagonist's motivation
Yeah, I have no idea what is going on with the Didact. The Forerunner books were supposed to tie into the game, but they almost make it more confusing when the Didact goes from a mostly noble warrior with an antipathy for humans to a completely insane Harbinger knockoff who wants to kill/compose all humans right now with a convenient MacGuffin without even assessing the general situation at all. Why such a rush? As I said, it may have worked better if all of this information was fed to us over time and we got to learn more, but as it stands it feels, above all, forced.
