In Response To: Re: ITT: The fans cannot be pleased (Louis Wu) : Okay, now I see where you were coming from. But attach rate and overall sales : are WILDLY different measures - I was really surprised to see you : attribute the comment you did to me. : The first Halo game had an attach rate of nearly 50% - Reach had an attach
Attach rate is a much better metric, though. Comparing H1 and Reach this way essentially demonstrates that the Xbox-owning market has grown, but that the percentage of that market that purchases Halo has gone down. Certainly that's to be expected, and 50% is a phenomenally high attach rate, and probably indicative of a shallow ecosystem-- not enough games to buy. On the other hand, you could look at it this way: If everyone who bought Halo 1 also bought Reach, it means that in the years between those two releases, the Xbox market increased in size from about 14M consoles to over 40M consoles, but of those 26M+ new users, only 2M bought Reach. That would not be a good indicator. Obviously this is not a complete view, since there's bound to be some overlap-- people who bought Reach but hadn't owned the first game, or people who didn't follow the franchise, or didn't upgrade to an Xbox 360. Still, it is an indication that it's not like half the people buying a console are buying it for a single game anymore. I wonder what COD's attach rates are like on the console.
