Starving the Flood is not depriving them of nourishment, but : intelligence. : Their overriding drive is to take over sentient beings to add to their : collective. They have a drive to go from Feral to Coordinated. Once : intelligent, the Flood have a goal and agenda; purpose. The spores and : infection forms can survive (they eat, expel waste, etc) but there's no : intelligence beyond their genetics to find sources of calcium and : intelligent beings. They need more and more intelligence to add to the : collective knowledge of the whole. Yes, but that doesn't seem like killing every sentient being is the best course of action to stop the Flood. Unless they do die from lack of intelligence at some point.
