: They replaced hard science with hard light.

:-)

That doesn't bother me half as much as the race memory / multiple personality / geas stuff bothers me.

Characters are always the pawns of authors. But a scrupulous author would respect a character's established traits and motivations.

And we can take authors to task if their characters do things for no valid reason, just to suit the author's story.

But the geas lets the author have his characters do any arbitrary thing or know any arbitrary thing. And the multiple characters in one body means that we can't really know a person. What they can do, what they will do.

Physical bodies just become objects that the author can move about for whatever purpose suits the author. They are no-longer people. They are just sources of exposition and a way of moving the reader's POV around the world. Our camera is locked to a 'character' and the character is moved around at whim and we have to follow.

Its all so cynical that they might as well just move the camera without bothering to pretend there is a character motivation and just talk direct to us (don't tell us that a long dead person is remembering this stuff, just tell us it).
