Re: Flood and evolution

In Response To: Re: Flood and evolution (scarab)

: Bungie says that the Flood starves without sentients.

: But it also looks like it can grow in an environment without sentients. An
: example of this is the Isolation mp map.

: So it can grow without us but somehow dies out.

: I think this is because the environment strikes back. The Flood then either
: fails to adapt and dies or adapts and is no longer Flood.

: I don't know whether the environment is entirely FCS but has scattered into a
: myriad of competing organisms that are missing the politically instilled
: aspects or if the environment is a richer mixture of FCS cells, non-FCS
: organisms and hybrids between the two.

: I suspect the latter because, it seems, that in biology, no strategy wins
: always so there are always a mixture of results.

: Have you read any of the Pern books?

: The thread is voracious and seems to conquer all. Yet, in the centuries
: between thread fall the natural environment wins out. Pern is not a
: seething mass of thread. It has forests and fields, grass, and fish in the
: sea.

: I also wonder if the GMs act like shepherds. If they need sentients to
: survive then they can't afford to consume all the sentients in one go.
: Its the same problem that the authors of the Blade films forget. The vampires
: are portrayed as if they want to turn all humans into vampires. You can
: spot the obvious flaw in that plan. :-)

So Halo doesn't kill Flood - it kills their ability to evolve. Without Sentients, the Flood spores (FSCs) will be beaten by the environment (i.e. bacteria et al) and rendered a dead end.

Brilliant strategy if your intended result is a galaxy wiped clean of higher life forms. It's almost like formatting a hard drive, but leaving BIOS intact.

Best thread I've read in ages....
