: I agree, to a point. Science fiction often divorces itself from fact and
: current theories in order to facilitate stories--faster-than-light travel
: to take us great distances, beaming to save money (and plot device!) But
: to a certain extent the best science fiction stories are still about
: people, and if you essentially make them time-activated schizophrenics it
: takes away a lot of my interest. Cryptum handled it in a much more
: interesting way then Primordium, I think, because there was a reason that
: Bornstellar essentially got subsumed. But with Chakas and Riser, there
: were essentially waiting around with dead people in their heads.

It was done better in Dune because it wasn't used as a means to push characters around the map or to provide exposition.

The characters with the memories were still vibrant people and their memories caused them problems that they had to deal with.

Some, like Alia, succumbed to a ruthless ancestor (sad that) and some made alliances with strong ancestors to keep a semblance of control. But it was all pro-character. It didn't detract from each character's personhood. The author made it all character based, was conflicts between characters, dead and living. And it took advantage of a novel's ability to let us get inside a character's head.
