Your thread got me thinking. They say Flood starves to death if no sentient is present to become food. Yet, the Flood obviously survived a long time at Delta Halo without sentient food. What if your thesis applies directly to this supposed paradox? What if the Flood really can't evolve on it's DNA alone? What if it only gather means to evolve through intelligence gain, like consuming, say sentients? We can clearly see Flood consuming non-sentient "animals" in Infinite Succor, so we know (and therefor, the Forerrunners must have known [and therefor 343 must have known]) it can, at least in the short-term, survive through other means. So maybe, yeah, natural selection does, in the long-term, wipe out the Flood, through lack of self-mutation, but it doesn't if the Flood gains intelligence through a host and mutates itself through the knowledge gained. No?
