Consider this. Starving the Flood is not depriving them of nourishment, but intelligence. Their overriding drive is to take over sentient beings to add to their collective. They have a drive to go from Feral to Coordinated. Once intelligent, the Flood have a goal and agenda; purpose. The spores and infection forms can survive (they eat, expel waste, etc) but there's no intelligence beyond their genetics to find sources of calcium and intelligent beings. They need more and more intelligence to add to the collective knowledge of the whole.
