In Response To: Re: Reach will have a great legacy. (Leviathan) : Not a fan of Hamlet or much Shakespeare, eh? Query: One of the classic tales of military campaigns that were doomed to failure was "A Bridge Too Far". It starts out hopeful with a catchy, upbeat score with some foreshadowing that this operation isn't going to end well. ("...the Germans first tried to take Nijmeagen Bridge in 1940; and got slaughtered.") The end result is, of course, a complete routing of the Allied troops, 2,000 dead, the Holland Underground exterminated, and the scheisskopf who proposed the plan in the first place eventually gets promoted to Field Marshall. I'm not sure if the movie itself is dark though. It doesn't rub your face in the fact that all these men are going to die, this is hopeless, the bad guys win. Rather, there's a lot of moments where you get to appreciate the heroism of the Allied troopers when they're caught in an unwinnable situation, and cheer at the victories they do make. So... a movie about a spectacularly failed military operation that isn't grimdark? It's possible.
