In Response To: Re: Totally Hypothetical Bungie Panel (PAX) (CaneCutter) : Discussion of Reach's Bobs and at least a hint, if not more, about the : Covenant to English translation. : - CC Dave Lieber (I believe) constructed a phonetically-based proto-language centered around existing English dialog spoken by the Covenant. If you wanted to translate it Halo and Halo 2 would be good places to begin, though it would represent a mountain of work. But it could be done. Bonus Answer! At one point, I wanted the UNSC forces at Reach to use phrases spoken by the Grunts later in the timeline, as if Grunt English was born purely out of combat. Turned out there weren't enough lines to really sell the idea without forcing some Troopers to sound foolish ("Kill you!"), and those that would have worked were either so iconic or so silly, that they wouldn't have fit well with Reach's tone ("Feet don't fail me now!"). Double Bonus Answer! On the subject of language, we also nuked the Mouth Sounds Skull. It's not really relevant to translating Covenant to English, but it makes me sad and happy to think about how it could have played out in game, because UNSC weapons go powpowpow, and Covenant weapons go pewpewpew.
