| Re: Totally Hypothetical Bungie Panel (PAX) | |

In Response To: Totally Hypothetical Bungie Panel (PAX) (urk) Would Marty like to do a film score? What are Marty's thoughts on the future of sound in games? The Halo games had a matrix of sound combinations - footsteps on stone, footsteps on grass, footsteps on metal - fist on stone, fist on wood, etc. Then Halo 3 mixed near gun fire with far gun fire. What is the next step? Will room acoustics be simulated in future? Not just fist on metal but fist on metal in a tall narrow corridor, fist on metal in an open space, etc. What are Butcher's thoughts on how this could be accomplished without being too computationally expensive? How about the effect of having an Elephant driving past you when you are near a wall - you go from being near a wall in an open space to being, momentarily, in a narrow corridor. Do you think that it would be worth the effort to model dynamic acoustics? What does Marty think of the prospect of having to find several times more sound samples? (fist on surface times the number of different acoustic environments) Boucher, do you think that some algorithmic processing could help - take fist on stone and apply some form of filter to simulate the different surroundings? Marty: is sound done? Are there no new areas to explore? Joe, would you consider adding a conversation wheel to future games? I think that they would allow the user to indicate how much story they want. But do you feel that they would interfere with how you would want to tell a story? Joe, I think that the Halo tie-in comics were rather patchy but do you think that you could use other media to supplement the story telling? There may be issues with using outside comic book companies, issues of unavoidable delays, trying to ensure that they get the right message across but Bungie has their own in-house artists, maybe a web comic on BNet would be easier to control (fewer production issues). Do you think that such outlets would just be a distraction from making games? What are your thoughts in general about mixed-media and games? How successful was it for Bungie and Halo? Would you do it differently if you could do it again? Joe, any more novels on the way? Has that itch been scratched? Or... ? Butcher, any new thoughts on doing AI? I liked that the NPCs in Halo perceived the world through their senses instead of having God like perception. It made it possible to fool them. I liked what seemed to be context sensitive dialogue. As an example: in the original game, near the end of AotCR, a grunt through a plasma grenade at me just as some doors were closing. The doors shut before the grenade passed through and so killed the Grunt squad on the far side. Just before the grenade went off a Grunt cried, "What were you THINKING!?!" (in Joe's voice). That really cracked me up. Are you guys thinking of other ways to sell the NPCs as being real creatures? I'm not talking about combat behavior, I'm thinking in terms of selling them as intentional agents, some way of understanding their intents and behaviors and so predicting how they will act. (That actually IS combat related. DOH!) Has Bungie ever considered having a left for dead style AI director? Would that make sense in the context of your new game? Butcher, I think that you did AI in the original game, then (network code?) What other areas would you like to get into?
