Try this line of reasoning. I'm new to the game. I'm a human fighting aliens. Now I'm fighting aliens on an alien ring world. Keyes and Cortana don't know what the Halo is, but as the player, we don't know much about the Covenant yet either. All we know is the aliens we're at war with are all over this place. It could be their home world, for all we know. Changing the line like this is the first hint that this ring world isn't of neither Human nor Covenant make. : Basically, if you absolutely insist on replacing it, which I suppose is
I see it the exact opposite way. We get a good enough look at the ring world's mechanical outer surface on our way in to know this entire thing is an artificial construct. Its scale boggles the mind, but that much is already established. Even with landmasses and water and whatnot, I find it odd to assume anything on this ring wasn't deliberately crafted. Strictly speaking, nothing is "natural."
