In Response To: Re: Halo [R]Evolved - Level 2: Halo (SonGoharotto)

: Maybe just the use of the nickname "Helljumper" makes the point in
: a more subtle manner?

I think that would be the best way to go. :)

: Walking around that section is far too interesting to just leave it as is.
: Stumbling upon a patrol and cutting them down is one thing. I feel like
: there has be some kind of deliberate engagement. This also serves a couple
: other purposes.

I'm assuming you mean "uninteresting." This early on in the game, I don't think anything can be considered uninteresting. You're in a huge environment with tons of potential for exploring. I think that if you expect excitement to come only from encounters, you're not giving the player enough credit.

: 1) Like the encounter I added at the end of PoA, this encourages the player
: to think about real tactics. In this case, making use of your AI teammate
: (and this will be the only time you have one that's effectively
: invincible).

I still can't help but think that you're moving a bit too fast with this sort of thing. PoA is a "let's learn how to aim in an FPS" level. Halo is more of a "let's learn combat in open areas" level. I think the new player already has enough on his plate at this point, and is learning all sorts of important things about combat in Halo without having all sorts of specialty encounters thrown in.

: 2) It's a bonding moment with Johnson. Makes it hurt all the more when you
: think he's dead. (By the way, I won't be retconning what happens to him or
: explain how he survives. Seeing him again in H2 should be a moment of
: relief for the player.)

: 3) It's a way of introducing the new power-up system, establishing it as pure
: Forerunner tech and not some random thing the Covies have lying around. (I
: never even noticed the Overshield or Active Camo on my very first
: play-through of H:CE. I first found them while trying different tactics at
: higher difficulty levels.)

: I'll scale it way back, but I'm definitely keeping an encounter here. Maybe
: just an Elite and some Jackals, for practice getting around their shields
: in close quarters.

An Elite and jackals is fine. I'm just against throwing SpecOps teams in the campaign so early.

: Yeah, but that's what the valley hub is for. The underground area
: specifically is about teasing the mystery of your surroundings. The
: Covenant's interest in this technology is your first real tip off that
: this is new to them too.

If I saw that the Covenant was interested in the technology, I wouldn't necessarily know that it was new to them as well. If anything, I would be more cautious, and assume that they knew something about its power and ability that I didn't. :P

: Well, there are a couple enemy patrols here in the game anyway. A few
: infantry on Normal, Banshees up the yin yang on Legendary.

: I think the inclusion of a couple Ghosts gives the player the chance to try a
: different mode of travel, so the player knows to expect Covie vehicles to
: handle differently.

: I also don't want the introduction of the hijack mechanic to be as simple as,
: "This Grunt isn't paying attention to you." But dodging Ghosts
: like a matador comes naturally.

I beg to differ. I've played co-op with too many people who decide to run straight at the ghost, as if it was going to turn around and run away from them if they got close enough. :P

I would keep Ghosts out of the playing field until such time as Johnson has left on a Pelican, however. You wouldn't really want to encourage players to just dump their Warthog with Johnson somewhere away from a rally point. Once he's gone though, go for it. It might be good to have a bit of a training thing, like the half-broken door on the Pillar of Autumn in Halo 1. On easier difficulties, you'll get a nav beacon to the door, and then an instruction box telling you to melee the door. In higher difficulties such an event never occurs, and you can actually bypass the door. Perhaps have a ghost with a distracted Elite in it guarding the entrance to one of the other branches from the valley hub on the lower difficulty levels, and have him fully alert and ready to kill on higher difficulty levels.
