In Response To: Re: Halo [R]Evolved - Level 2: Halo (Pkmnrulz240)

: I see where you're coming from. I could agree on the need for that if you did
: in fact want to introduce ODSTs this early (although again, I would argue
: against that... But this is your script, so... :P). But I would still
: change that line. "Crazy" is just too basic of a word. It's too
: generic, and is applied to anything and everything. Coming from Foehammer,
: it would just sound pretty cheesy.

: If you must introduce the ODSTs in the dialogue here, I would just mention
: them by name, but refrain from getting into any sort of descriptive
: details about them until later. Again, it seems like it's a little too
: early in the game to be diving into something like that. Just my $0.02
: though.

Maybe just the use of the nickname "Helljumper" makes the point in a more subtle manner?

: Nah, there's absolutely no reason for Banshees on this level. Leave the
: Banshee until Two Betrayals.

Agreed.

: At this point in the game, I don't think that you need to be thinking about
: "new, different encounters." A new player to the game still
: hasn't experienced all the standard types of encounters found in Halo.
: Heck, they still haven't come across Hunters yet (don't even think about
: it. ;) ). At this point, the average player is still getting the hang of
: Halo combat, and doesn't need to be thrown into a billion different
: situations right away. Nor do they need to be introduced to the most
: fierce of enemies yet (SpecOps). Save those for later. I think Bungie did
: a good job when it comes to introducing them at certain parts throughout
: the story. No need to rush with them.

Walking around that section is far too interesting to just leave it as is. Stumbling upon a patrol and cutting them down is one thing. I feel like there has be some kind of deliberate engagement. This also serves a couple other purposes.

1) Like the encounter I added at the end of PoA, this encourages the player to think about real tactics. In this case, making use of your AI teammate (and this will be the only time you have one that's effectively invincible).

2) It's a bonding moment with Johnson. Makes it hurt all the more when you think he's dead. (By the way, I won't be retconning what happens to him or explain how he survives. Seeing him again in H2 should be a moment of relief for the player.)

3) It's a way of introducing the new power-up system, establishing it as pure Forerunner tech and not some random thing the Covies have lying around. (I never even noticed the Overshield or Active Camo on my very first play-through of H:CE. I first found them while trying different tactics at higher difficulty levels.)

I'll scale it way back, but I'm definitely keeping an encounter here. Maybe just an Elite and some Jackals, for practice getting around their shields in close quarters.

: I'd argue that just listening to Cortana and trying to get enough air time to
: get your marine gunner to fist pump the air is part of the magic of the
: second level. It's a vast, open area where your vehicle can really shine.

Yeah, but that's what the valley hub is for. The underground area specifically is about teasing the mystery of your surroundings. The Covenant's interest in this technology is your first real tip off that this is new to them too.

: But the middle part should be a sanctuary, free for the most part of
: enemies. There's nothing wrong with a little bit of a drag while driving
: from crash site to crash site. Again, I think that's one of the great
: parts of the level. Just me and my warthog.

Well, there are a couple enemy patrols here in the game anyway. A few infantry on Normal, Banshees up the yin yang on Legendary.

I think the inclusion of a couple Ghosts gives the player the chance to try a different mode of travel, so the player knows to expect Covie vehicles to handle differently.

I also don't want the introduction of the hijack mechanic to be as simple as, "This Grunt isn't paying attention to you." But dodging Ghosts like a matador comes naturally.

: Just wanted to offer my opinions. Like I said, it's still your script,
: and please don't take anything I say personally. I think all of us
: here at HBO have some sort of strong opinions about Halo 1.
: While we may not agree with one another on many issues
: regarding the original Halo, I'm sure that whatever we feel about
: it, we're passionate about those feelings. :)

Believe me, I appreciate constructive feedback. PoA was easy to rewrite because I didn't feel the need to change much, but these are going to start getting more challenging.
