Because, the T&R was only 1.7 km in length (at the right scale), so if they did this at the right scale, assuming those are carriers, then it would take up several thousand sqaure miles. As a reference, go to google Earth, or google maps if you don't have the former, and look at the kilimanjaro, New Mombasa region: it's big.
