That's a good point. Just a followup question: in your page comparing the scale of objects in Halo, you mentioned that relatively few objects were presented out of scale-- the T&R, the Halo itself, Threshold and Basis, for instance. Those are all really huge, really far away, or both, with the exception of the T&R. There's no particular reason to believe that anything (other than perhaps Mt. Kilimanjaro) in the H3 trailer is as large or as far away as any of those objects. Bungie says the artifact is three miles across, so I'll take that at face value. Given that value, it seems conceivable to me that the buildings in the distance are rougly five times further away than that. I'd love to get a definitive answer and maybe we will, but I think that although it's not logically ironclad, I'm willing to go down the following road: 1) We can render geometry 16 game miles away.
and conclude that: 4) New Mombasa is < 16 miles away. I realize this is merely an assertion of probability and not something that necessarily follows from the three assumptions. I do, of course realize that they could scale new mombasa as you've suggested and that would invalidate the conclusion-- however, I'd suggest that the question of scaling anything invalidates the concept of "game miles" anyway. In other words, if I were Bungie, and I had scaled anything in that trailer, I doubt I'd have bothered to say how many "game miles" away we could render geometry, or else I'd have clarified that not everything was to scale. | |
