I think it's just the progress in game resources that they can have that now as geometry (regardless of scale) rather than relegate it to a bitmap texture. Again, as I had said in a previous thread, the new HDR lighting will react cooler upon geometry now than with a flat texture unresponsive to dynamic lighting.
