In Response To: My semi-annual novel...replayability and teh Dukez (Ducain)

Long time since I last posted here - been playing Halo PC:)

Ducain:

1st - thanks for all the stuff you've done with tricking. I learned a lot watching the videos you made way back when, and it gave me even more fun things to try with Halo.

I agree that campaign was the weakest element of Halo 2, but I don't really think online co-op would change that. After all, Halo was rather successful without online co-op. Also, my daughters and I used to spend hours replaying Halo levels in co-op - it took a long time before we got tired enough of levels to go a few weeks without playing them. We still love playing the best ones - AOTCR, Halo, SC, etc.

It's not that Halo 2's campaign is bad. It compares very well with 95% of other games out there...just not with Halo. And I'm not here to critique Halo 2. It's a good game. I think in disappointment, people lose sight of that.

It's just not *as* good as Halo. It's kinda like the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan, and the Bulls the year after he retired (the 2nd time): The Bulls with Jordan were the pinnacle, the ceiling - an all-time great team. The year after Jordan left, they were still a really good team - but not one of the best ever. Just good.

Halo is like the Bulls with Jordan - one of the best games ever made, where even its few flaws make you appreciate it all the more. The fact that it was a launch title makes that all the more amazing. But like the Jordan-less Bulls, Halo 2 is still pretty good.

Halo's levels were so expansive, luxurious. The world was beautiful, and the missions created for said world were creative, somewhat open-ended and *completely* immersive. Even the little things are great - like on the level Halo, walking up to trees and rocks, and hitting them with your pistol. The animation, the sounds, the effect of birds chirping far away. The mountains blocking your view of the sun on Silent Cartographer.

Halo is simply a beautiful game. 4 years later, it's still the best game I've ever played. And it fought *hard* to get that vote from me...cuz I loves me some Unreal Tournament!

I still play Halo PC online, in fact, because Blood Gulch, Hang 'Em High, Sidewinder, Danger Canyon, etc. are all - still - a helluva lot of fun to play.

Peace out!
