In Response To: Re: Halo 3: My Musings on my Blog (Matt) Here's my opinion(it's just my opinion, don't get worked up on it): I feel Halo 2 went the wrong way. I feel, it was directed more towards the mainstream audience, adding features which necessarily don't add towards the gameplay experience, but instead, add towards the "kickass" -ness, which the average Joe will like; not what the fans will like. The Single Player storyline was completely changed so those who've never played the first, can "fit-in" with those who have. Meaning, it was dumbed down to something easy to understand; once again, aimed towards the mainstream audience.
The Xbox Live experience was nothing as I thought it would be. Optimatch and Ranking soon became the way to "show off". That stupid number next to their name induced cheating and generally making 90% of all XBLers, jerks. Fortunately, the party system saved xbox live a bit. The game went from aiming, to spraying and praying. Then there is the weapons. I really hate what they did to the plasma pistol. It used to be a weapon you could kill someone with. Both the plasma guns in Halo 1 had a stun, which added to the gameplay balance. Then, there is the pistol. "If it aint broke, don't fix it". Although I understand Bungie felt it was extremely unbalanced, in my opinion, it added balance towards the game. A skilled pistol-er had a chance against someone with a shotgun or a sniper rifle. Obviously, the sniper is better for long range, and the shotgun is better for short range, but the pistol gave them a chance to survive. If Halo 2 was built for balance, why is it whoever gets the better guns wins? And as Reconciliation put it yesterday "Games fit in two categories: Stress Relievers, and Stress Inducers."
Halo 2 isn't a bad game, it just isn't on par with Halo 1. (Feel free to attack my opinion. Because, of course, opinions are opinions. One isn't greater than another.)
