In Response To: Halo 3: My Musings on my Blog (Diss3nt) I pretty much agree with you, for the most part. Especially about the hype thing. In the year or two that I followed development of Halo 2 it had been built up so much that by the time it came out and I actually got to play it I couldn't help but end up a little underwhelmed. I blame this partly to overexposure in the games media, and partly for my own fervent intensity to which I followed the game and it's creators. Though literally Halo 2 was everywhere, it seemed, and everyone was talking about it. Anything, after a certain point of being very popular starts to get old after a while, you know? On physics: I enjoyed the physics of Halo 1. Halo 2 used Havok, right? This is probably an unpopular opinion but I don't really like Havok. It's nice and all, but all the games that I've played that use it seem to have the same "feel" to them. They all sort of feel floaty until you get used to it. Granted, that's not a huge thing to complain about, and I'm not complaing mind you, it's just that it's there and I notice that and it detracts slightly from my experience with the game. However, yes, a better physics engine can be used to do some great things for the gameplay. I just like the more personalized physics of Halo 1 as opposed to the sort of... not really generic but common feeling Havok engine. I'll give it to Bungie, Halo 1 was a really, really tough act to follow. And in some ways they surpassed it with Halo 2, yet in some ways they didn't, as covered in articles on Rampancy and other places. Halo 2 is still a great game, it's just the problem for me at least is if you played the first game to any extent and you weren't a big multiplayer fan(I wasn't either, like you) then Halo 2 probably felt lacking. I feel... not really betrayal, but more like disenchantment with Bungie. It was like after playing Halo I built them up as these God-like developers but they're just people like you and me. They make mistakes too and aren't perfect, and I could only understand that after I was able to step back and look at things after the fact. I have hopes for Halo 3, and I agree with you that it should end here if it can. Already it's starting to seem like Halo is just Microsoft's cash cow franchise that they can trump out and make a ton of money on, even though I know that isn't really the case. It's just the way things seem right now and maybe I'm wrong, hopefully. Though I'd really like to see them trying out new ideas and concepts because I still believe in them as great, creative game designers, it's just that there's only so many ways you can keep the same game fresh without straying too far from what made the game great to begin with. I guess it's safe to say these things now that the "controversy" within the fan ranks of the Halo 2 release has passed so I'll just hit post now. |
