| Halo: Indeed a tragedy... | |

In Response To: Re: Chiron (Wado SG) It is indeed intriguing to compare the plot of Halo to the structure of a Greek tragedy. Because in the end, that's what Halo is...I'm sure the guys a Bungie took nods from such epics as the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Aeniad, and so on. But a tragedy must have a tragic character, and a tragic character must have a tragic flaw. Dare we compare Spartan 117 to the Centaurs? Let's dare...as you said, they had a propensity to drink, be way too merry, and mate with human women. John is NONE of those things, but the actions of a centaur could parallel John's predicament. Mate with human women, a cross between species...or entities. I believe the tragic flaw of John is his blind dependence on Cortana, for she knows everything about the forerunner, halo, everything, and could be using John for her own ends. The excessive drinking implies a blissful ignorance, a certain innocene concerning the truth of the world around him. Something to do with the forerunner and humanity's existance, who knows. Let's face it, if the forerunner-human bloodline is proven, then the concept of God, immortality, and paradise vanishes, just like in Epic of Gilgamesh, where he learned from his brother Enkidu that darkness is the only thing that awaits after death. But still, Halo has more in common with a Greek tragedy. The value of sacrifice comes into play many times during the game and the novels. I believe John must sacrifice himself...or be sacrificed...to save either humanity or the long lost forerunner. Furthermore, I believe the true FOIL throughout the Halo plot IS Colonol Ackerson. The Covenant IS the enemy, but both the Chief and Ackerson have very different ways of confronting it. Ackerson would not sacrifice himself to save humanity, where as the Chief would no doubt. The Chief would be more willing to seek outside help (perhaps the forerunner) to stop the Covenant, where as Ackerson is in it for the pride and glory of the Helljumpers.
