This is an additional attempt at adjusting your basic layout. I'm not very good with graphic design, but there's a couple basic concepts I've been trying to get across.

1. I got rid of the white lines boxing the Marathon pic at the top. They don't contribute anything to the overall page design and look out of place since the rest of the page doesn't use those lines. You could use a fade effect on the image if you don't like the hard cutoff, but I don't think that's a major issue.
2. Took the upper bar and shortened it to fit the rest of the layout. Now there isn't really any content going out to the edges of the page. If you wanted, this would be a good place to have a (very understated) image or graphic design going out to the edge of the page, but I don't think it looks bad as just black.
3. I just desaturated all of the red. I think the gray looks pretty bad too, but notice that now that it's gray, all of the attention in the news boxes is focused on the white text and green hyperlinks.
4. I also entirely removed the borders around the side boxes. When you de-clutter the main layout, there's no reason for explicitly drawn lines to separate everything. Let the text coloring and layout changes do the work for you.
I don't think gray and green is a particularly good color combination, looking at it now, but it shows off what I was referring to in earlier posts. Colors and brightness call attention only to things that actually need to be highlighted, and everything else is understated to reduce visual chaff and make the overall appearance easier to take in.

	Message: : This is an additional attempt at adjusting your basic layout. I'm not very : good with graphic design, but there's a couple basic concepts I've been : trying to get across. : http://i.imgur.com/yTt0L.png : 1. I got rid of the white lines boxing the Marathon pic at the top. They : don't contribute anything to the overall page design and look out of place : since the rest of the page doesn't use those lines. You could use a fade : effect on the image if you don't like the hard cutoff, but I don't think : that's a major issue. : 2. Took the upper bar and shortened it to fit the rest of the layout. Now : there isn't really any content going out to the edges of the page. If you : wanted, this would be a good place to have a ( very understated) image or : graphic design going out to the edge of the page, but I don't think it : looks bad as just black. : 3. I just desaturated all of the red. I think the gray looks pretty bad too, : but notice that now that it's gray, all of the attention in the news boxes : is focused on the white text and green hyperlinks. : 4. I also entirely removed the borders around the side boxes. When you : de-clutter the main layout, there's no reason for explicitly drawn lines : to separate everything. Let the text coloring and layout changes do the : work for you. : I don't think gray and green is a particularly good color combination, : looking at it now, but it shows off what I was referring to in earlier : posts. Colors and brightness call attention only to things that actually : need to be highlighted, and everything else is understated to reduce : visual chaff and make the overall appearance easier to take in.
