This is very true. In a previous post I was suggesting adding a couple screenshots. This may be a good place to put them. Some attractive scenery that catches the eye of the reader right away might be an improvement.
As an aside, I'm really quite fond of the Rubicon X banner, although I suspect people might think the animated background is hokey and distracting. Nonetheless, it's a good way to get a lot of neat panoramas without using too much horizontal space.

If MBO is primarily used as sort of a link hub for people, then it works great. Your eye goes straight to the Compiler, and then down to the links. If the purpose is to be a news source first, then I agree, the Compiler graphic is working against that goal.

Very good points. The real question is how much post information is even relevant. When I look at websites like this, I find that post information tends to be clutter, simply because I don't care. Aside from the headline and date, how much information do you need? The poster of the news isn't really relevant because it's not an opinion piece (sorry Hamish!) and how often is more than one news piece posted per day? Basically, I think the title bar is fine, but the "signature" is extra, in the case of this particular layout.
