I'm looking at a lot of column-style websites and almost all of them are fixed at 1024 pixels in width. You can call it laziness if you want, but it's something that is visually appealing for pretty much all resolutions and monitors. It's not so narrow that it's annoying in higher resolutions, like this website is, and it's not wide enough to alienate a significant number of users of older computers. Hasn't 1024x768 been the minimum native resolution for computers since, like, 2000? It works on phones, even.
I just think you're missing or not addressing the argument that filling the entire page of a widescreen resolution is not attractive. You can use variable-width tricks if you want, but that's not going to fix the problem for people that have anything even resembling a "large" monitor. It's something that's used primarily for information dump sites, like Wikipedia. Wikipedia has a large amount of information to convey, and that's the top priority, over readability. Image-based sites naturally should use the whole screen for maximum visual quality. Article-based sites use column formats because it's easier to read and the resulting design is cleaner. And they don't put two columns on one page, they just go to another page. It's like the blue and yellow on this site: they clash, and things stand out much more than they need to for no reason.
And having the viewer adjust the window size is absolutely not the right answer. I browse using tabs. Some websites are better when they address the full screen, like Gmail, message boards, or Wikipedia -- and some websites aren't, like Youtube or Cracked. But these websites format the width for me. If I want to change the window size of one tab, I have to disconnect it from the other tabs and then windowize it. It's inconvenient, and if that's the only solution to make a site readable I'm just not going to use the site.
Also, I'm not sure you understand color palette choices. Red and green are opposite colors. You shouldn't use both of them unless you're specifically trying to make colors clash or it's a Christmas website. They just don't go together at all. If it was green and blue, it wouldn't be an issue, because they go together.

	Message: : I'm looking at a lot of column-style websites and almost all of them are : fixed at 1024 pixels in width. You can call it laziness if you want, but : it's something that is visually appealing for pretty much all resolutions : and monitors. It's not so narrow that it's annoying in higher resolutions, : like this website is, and it's not wide enough to alienate a significant : number of users of older computers. Hasn't 1024x768 been the minimum : native resolution for computers since, like, 2000? It works on phones, : even. : I just think you're missing or not addressing the argument that filling the : entire page of a widescreen resolution is not attractive. You can use : variable-width tricks if you want, but that's not going to fix the problem : for people that have anything even resembling a "large" monitor. : It's something that's used primarily for information dump sites, like : Wikipedia. Wikipedia has a large amount of information to convey, and : that's the top priority, over readability. Image-based sites naturally : should use the whole screen for maximum visual quality. Article-based : sites use column formats because it's easier to read and the resulting : design is cleaner. And they don't put two columns on one page, they just : go to another page. It's like the blue and yellow on this site: they : clash, and things stand out much more than they need to for no reason. : And having the viewer adjust the window size is absolutely not the right : answer. I browse using tabs. Some websites are better when they address : the full screen, like Gmail, message boards, or Wikipedia -- and some : websites aren't, like Youtube or Cracked. But these websites format the : width for me. If I want to change the window size of one tab, I have to : disconnect it from the other tabs and then windowize it. It's : inconvenient, and if that's the only solution to make a site readable I'm : just not going to use the site. : Also, I'm not sure you understand color palette choices. Red and green are : opposite colors. You shouldn't use both of them unless you're specifically : trying to make colors clash or it's a Christmas website. They just don't : go together at all. If it was green and blue, it wouldn't be an issue, : because they go together.
