It currently feeds down : each column first, top to bottom then left to right, and relies on CSS3 : and so defaults to just wide news boxes on older browsers, but people with : huge screens usually run newer browsers anyway. : An alternate method would fill in each row first, left to right then top to : bottom, and will work on more older browsers that don't support CSS3 : columns, but doesn't scale as well to the exact screen size, and doesn't : look as good when the news boxes are not of the same height, as they often : won't be. Here's an idea: why does the left menu scroll with the page if there's nothing vertically below it? If you were to keep it fixed relative to the browser window, or stop it from going completely out of view if it's too tall, it'd be much easier to access and wouldn't block any content. As for the general layout, why do we need so much space and effort dedicated to news? As nice as it is to see interesting CSS tricks, it's a little bit weird seeing a page dynamically change in such a drastic manner. I like RyokoTK's http://i.imgur.com/36otA.png layout because it doesn't try too hard to grab the viewer's attention by putting as much content as physically possible. Also, I'm personally in favor of the modern/minimalistic approach to the site, which was the first idea I aired.
