In Response To: Halo 4 images released (2900d4u) Having read the thread, I have to say that there are things in these new images that I like, that I feel are consistent with a darker, more adult spin on the Halo we know and love. And there are also things that I feel tried to be one thing and ended up being too similar to another. First of all, I understand that there is great variety in the species and cultures left in the wake of The Covenant's End. Maybe these Unggoy are a slight offset of breed, made for hard labor in mines or something? There can be explanations for the things that I dislike that I don't know and I am content with that so long as 343 eventually gets around to pointing that out, hopefully during gameplay. I like that they wanted to make the Unggoy less like cowardly little sources of silly comic relief and more like what are talked about in the books: horrid little frustrations on the battlefield that humanity knows are being used as cannon fodder and can't do anything about it, and if they lose, humanity knows that the grunts are hungry and show the dead no respect at all. Not that the Jiralhanae are any better... I think I'd say that they're worse. The Jiralhanae don't wait until you're dead to start eating, whereas the Unggoy haven't been shown to do that yet (unless my memory fails me... it is late). I don't really like the particulars of that one Unggoy we see in the render with its skin showing and being all confusing in light of the directions that the visual identity that the Covenant Military Unggoy took in Halo 3 and ODST. I'm open to explanations, though. :) I agree with those who posted about the proud and elegant Sangheili, but I also think that that image can be compatible with many of the details in these new renders. Thel Vadam is certainly a very dark-skinned Saurian, but maybe albinos are far more prevalent in their bloodline than in humanity's? It's times like these where I would really, really like a super-high-resolution "library" of Halo 3D content detailing everything at levels of detail that wouldn't even be appropriate in a CG film, let alone a videogame, so that we could all have a great and consistent point of reference. Then artists could make all kinds of changes and additions, sure, but some things would be set in stone like whether the methane-breathing Unggoy have exoskeletons or have turtle-like bodies. Give that Unggoy a new set of armor, next Halo game artist guy! But don't make him have a new number of toes. That just doesn't even make sense. Either your Unggoy is the right kind of Unggoy or the Bungie Unggoy is the right kind of Unggoy, they can't both be the right kind. Really, just having an awesome breakdown on alien biology in the Haloverse AFTER gauging fan reaction (if 90,999 Halo fans out of 100,000 despise the new Unggoy redesign... there might be need for a change come Halo 5...) would be super useful. Likes: I love the "raptor talons" on the Elite armor. I also like the upward spikes on their boots/legs. They make a lot of sense from a combat perspective for an Elite, because those legs are killer. I love the upgrade in graphics, not just tech-wise, but visual-direction-wise. I patiently wait for Halo 5 to take full advantage of the next Xbox and DirectX11. Mess that up or fail to take advantage of it, and... that's a paddlin'. I love that there is a greater variety in what the aliens are WEARING. I might think that that grunt's nosetube that doesn't even lead to his gas tank is stupid, but hey, at least it's different. I've been waiting for that kind of variety in enemy types in games for as long as I can remember. So bravo on that. Now shoot that contradictory Grunt in his ugly little cavetroll face. I love that the "spirit" of the changes all seem to be aimed at removing our level of comfort with what we think we've come to know about the various species that were once a part of The Covenant, and taking it in an uncomfortable direction. Very glad to see that. I like the greater level of definition in Cortana's "skin". I'm hoping that there will be some sort of sword easter egg in there somewhere, maybe a reference to Joyeuse? I like the idea of weapons looking like they were made by different manufacturers with different sets of aesthetic preferences. Compare a Glock G17 to a Taurus Raging Bull and a Colt 1911. They do not look like they all came from the same place in a single man's mind. They look like they came from the minds of various men who probably would have disagreed with each other on what looked best. I like there being "more " to the look of the black undersuit of MJOLNIR. Always felt that could have benefited from more attention being brought to it. I've always thought of Sangheili as a kind of mix of Dragon, Man, and Serpent. Not sure yet whether these designs reinforce that or not, on a "what they look like naked" level. Dislikes: It's really late and I need to go to bed. :P They exist, they are not few, but they are not egregiously severe at this point. Might post about them later. Will say that I very much dislike the hex pattern on the visor. Not a fan. Also not ecstatic about that one particular Unggoy's facial structure or dermis. Everything else will have to wait, it's super late for me.
