In Response To: Elites Make me sadface (Metalingus627) : This is what an Elite should look like: : Dignified, yet still intimidating. I wasn't a huge fan of the direction they : took them in Halo 3 and Reach, but for the most part I accepted it because : of cool looking armor, and that they still maintained the dignified, : confident air about them. Halo Wars got the Arbiter right for his : charachter, but the rest of the Elites looked like crap. : Halo 4 takes the worst parts of the Halo Wars design and attaches them to the : worst parts of the Halo: Reach and Halo 3 designs. They look like atypical : villains. They're butt ugly and the skin tone is all wrong. They wouldn't : be out of place (besides perhaps the colorful armor) among the Locust : horde. : Can you imagine the Arbiter or Half-Jaw looking like this? It would take away : all the respect they earned in their previous two outings. These aren't : Elites, their flunkies to be easily forgotten once we come up against Halo : 4s' real villains. Indeed. I don’t agree with what many people across the community seem to say about the aesthetic changes, in that they are perfectly valid because they are “aliens”. I mean, okay, it’s valid within what alien defines, but is it really necessary to go all out on making them look as rough, uncivilized, repulsive and aggressive looking as you can? Alien defines a pretty broad set. They were already alien looking before. I shouldn’t need to point out that alien only means “non-native”; it doesn’t necessarily imply breaking every branch of the ugly tree on your way down. I don’t think they match their characterization as well as before now: prideful, civilized and honor bound, and rational and intelligent, but also possessing a soul; feelings and a personality. I think their previous looks defined that quite well, and were ultimately tailored to fit that characterization. I recall an interview with Jason Jones (?) stating how they abandoned the concept of the Elites having a tail for, besides practical reasons, preserving their civilized look. Whether that is true or not is beside the point; what is important is that their design was centered on making them look the part, and contrasted the likes of the more animalistic and primal Brutes, who were likewise designed aesthetically for that persona. I don’t see the culture, character and persona of the Elites meaning as much, and connecting as well, with this incarnation. Which you point out with Thel and Rtas anyway, and I agree: I couldn’t imagine them looking like that to be honest. It doesn’t feel like good character relating material. (I am really hoping that this doesn't mark the relegation of the Elites from respectable characters to tin-foil enemies again. I have a gut feeling from recent works that this is what’s gonna happen…:/) Though to balance the negative a bit, I think that the perspective of the shots in the GI article sort of did the proportions of the model an injustice. The feet on the Spec-Ops variant don’t look as clunky as they did there, which is good. This is the only thing I'm not too keen on though. Everything else about the game looks splendid. I really like the Spartan-IV designs.
