The books always said that Grunts were arthropods. Obviously they can't be members of any earthly clade so I just took that as a shorthand to say that they had exoskeletons. I just like my aliens to be... alien. Exoskeleton is a start. Collections of worms are cool. (especially if they are orange hot, radioactive, lava monsters!) Have you ever wondered about how Elites eat? Their mouth fingers could be derived from unfused branchial arches but there doesn't seem to be enough mechanical advantage to let them chew effectively. Their teeth don't seem to oppose (come together in opposition) and what to they do with those teeth at the front? Do they scrape bark with them? :-) Even if they managed to bite and chew with those teeth - I would expect the bitten pieces to drop right out of the gap that the mouth fingers leave (visible from below when the Arbiter and Chief reached the top of the elevator b4 encountering Flood allies). Do you think that they have pharyngeal jaws? Are the visible mouth fingers the remnants of a capture mechanism, perhaps preserved for display? Could an Elite pick up a bowl with its mouth fingers and nom the contents directly from the bowl without using its hands? Its a pity that Halo 4 Elites now have codpieces. It suggests that they have external genitalia just like we do. Boring! Come on art guys, have some imagination. I imagined that the Elite gut had its origin and termination at the mouth. The cloaca would be evertable. Imagine putting your arm in a long sock and grabbing a tennis ball then pull your hand back until the sock is outside in. To have a dump like an Elite revers the process and deliver the tennis ball well outside of the mouth. Elite toilets could be at chest hight. :-) You could see the implications for reproduction... Maybe their young are like marsupials, perhaps only the mouth fingers are developed and they latch onto a host and drink blood until the limbs develop and they are weaned. maybe that would be why the Elites would retain the mouth fingers even though they are next to useless for chewing and are too small to capture prey. Anyway, I would prefer something like that to - mammals with lumpy skin.
