Re: We can rebuild it, we have the technology

In Response To: Re: We can rebuild it, we have the technology (SonGoharotto)

: Because I enjoy H:CE enough to play it over and over, but I still sometimes
: wish certain things were different. As this is all speculative, I don't
: see the harm in a little wishful thinking.

Point.
There really isn't anything wrong with wishful thinking, and I am clearly overreacting. I guess I'm a little defensive because of talk about 343i actually remaking Halo: CE.

I mean, you can corner me any other time, and I'll talk about what I think could have been done better with any of the games. But when it comes down to the end, I can't really support making story changes because it hurts the integrity of the Halo backstory. You can't tell me that the Director's Cut of Apocalypse Now! tells the same story as the original version. You can't tell me that Han is the same person in the Lucas Remakes as he was in the original theatrical release.

As for making Johnson's character deeper, like he was in the later games, I'm not sure that's a good idea. As of Halo: CE, his story and the Chief's story weren't quite wedded together yet, so he was just that guy in the background. Back then, we noticed what anybody who doesn't know him yet notices; big mouth, lots of one-liners.

: I kind of assumed that's how it always was. Novelizations aren't canon unless
: acknowledged as such in the core fiction, whether that's the Star Wars
: movies or Halo games. That doesn't prevent me from enjoying the expanded
: universe for what it is. I don't see much fun in taking an all-or-nothing
: approach.

I, for one, don't see the fun in Canon and Not-Really-Canon. The former seems like the creators (Bungie) and the writers are working closely together to build a universe. A Playground of the Mind, if you will. Why are these things created if they aren't supposed to add something to the story?

The latter seems more like Bungie or 343i are just farming out to anybody with an established name. The best we make canon, everyone else get's published.

Got to admit, the "non-canon unless we make it canon" approach would work rather well toward Legends.

: For the record, I thought it was a bad idea to shoehorn Flood into Halo Wars.

A bad idea in a long string of bad ideas.

: And like I said, I'm not married to the idea of Brutes on Alpha Halo. In
: fact, the Flood easily fill the same role of bullet sponges that charge at
: you. Having to fight nothing but Brutes and Flood towards the end of Halo
: 2 may be why is started to drag, for me.

Lol, point taken.

: Whoa, chill out.

: If I wasn't clear enough before, let me state that I am also of the opinion
: that mechs are not required in Halo. It has already been established that
: the UNSC wins on the ground more often than not, even without Spartans.

Mkay. Sorry.

: And from a gameplay perspective, a Spartan itself is already "mechanized
: infantry," so to speak. Climbing into something like a Cyclops or the
: HRUNTING/YGGDRASIL Prototype would somehow devalue the uniqueness of a
: Spartan. I don't want that.

Meh, my hatred for mecha stems mostly from the fact that I'm an engineer and a (military) hardware nut. Seeing mecha in a warzone is like...

OK, I know the Warthog and Scorpion have their problems, but they're rather easy to ignore unless you're up against a really good sniper on Hemorrhage. Seeing mecha alongside them would be like seeing a Spartan running around with a chainsaw for an arm, or a sword that weighs more than he does.

: I like the Bubble Shield too, but I'd gladly sacrifice it for a more
: streamlined approach to gameplay.

Seems like a good equipment trade-off with invisibility.

You can have near-complete invisibility, you can take a rocket to the face, or you can become invincible for thirty seconds, so long as you don't have to go anywhere.

Hell, on the Library, it would work perfect with the shotgun.

: My intention is to revitalize classic mechanics rather than introducing
: something brand new or, heaven forbid, suggest the full suite of so-called
: "broken" AAs in a H:CE remake.

: On that note, about the Jetpack. Mixes up combat in interesting ways. I can
: see how it might be useful on a mission like RED FLAG. Hmmm...

Lol, yeah. I can live without Armor Lock (I don't HATE it, but I don't use it that much) Hologram, and Jet Pack. Just don't take away my sprint! D:

You know, instead of Halo: CE remake, I would rather see the Reach engine ported to PC. That way, the modding community will get to use all those fun little features, the better graphics, etc.

What I've always wanted to see is, I've wanted to see mods where campaign levels are opened up. More rooms are added and doors are unlocked, so you have three different ways to get from the cyro room to the bridge on the Pillar of Autumn, and four ways to get to the lifeboats. The area around the Control Room would be opened up, so it feels more like an administration/security complex than a bunch of checkpoints along a winding path. New Mombassa could be opened up, especially Sniper Alley.

What'd'ya think?

For those who don't want to sleep tonight...
