(General Vagueness) : It's pretty clear to me the Cortana letters are not a priority-- I wouldn't : be the least bit surprised to see the information in them alluded to, and : maybe presented with minor changes by a different character. They contained a Sol empire, and the idea of lost colonies. In the snippets we see that Humanity had and lost an empire. The cool bit is that Humans have twice taken a bloody nose by foes using more advanced Forerunner tech. And there is something Tolkienesque in the idea that these things repeat themselves but with players that are shadows of those who came before. Melkor vs Feanor + Valar, Sauron vs Gil-Galad and the Numenoreans, the reduced Sauron vs the fallen men of Gondor. Forerunners vs Empire, Covenant vs UNSC. : Did you not read chapter two? Did you not read the paragraph that preceded the one you quoted? Could the Cortana letters be brought into the fold without changing the timing of Earth's discovery?
