In those letters Sol once had colonies and then lost : them and reverted to a pee-scientific state. Once they went back into : space they found humans already living on the planets that they found. I'm not entirely familiar with the letters but this sounds interesting. It does indeed sound like they could be trying to tie this concept into the story. But they're trying to incorporated the letters after the introduction of the mythology in the terminals which leads me to believe the story is vastly altered from what the Cortana letters originally meant. According to the description you provided about what the letters said (Sol previously having colonies), the story of humanity being remnants of the Forerunner race can still apply. In this case, the letters imply that Earth is the homeworld of the Forerunners and that at one point in history (presumably the result of the Flood War), they were reverted to a pre-scientific state as you say. I suppose, however, that these musings matter little now since it's obviously not the case, however the idea of the backstory snowballing into something so complicated makes me wonder if it would have been better off the way it was in the original concept, assuming such a concept ever existed. .
