It is not even an eye blink in geological time, after : all. The Forerunner have obviously been around for many thousands of : years. No, its not just a matter of how long a Forerunner lives. I'd need to go back and reread the terminals but the discovery seemed to be post Flood encounter and there wasn't enough time to do much to protect us. Even for a long lived Forerunner finding Earth 9K years before you encounter the Flood gives you enough time to do something to help us.
