In Response To: Re: Cryptum chapters 1&2 available online (De Laal) its not just a clash between games and books. Even from the various commentaries it is clear that much of it was made up as they went along. What else could you expect to happen? They wrote enough story for one game. Nylund was asked by MS to write a novel with not a lot of input from Bungie. JJ sat down *after* the original game and invented the events of h2. Production problems eviscerated that story and so the Halo 3 story was born. We have the commentators laughing about having to explain how the Halos work in every game and that even they aren't sure how they work. They also laugh about the idea that all this had been worked out in advance - that they weren't just making it up as they went along. You also have to understand that the Halo story has had multiple authors, different teams comprised of individuals who each have their own slant on 'the' story. Everybody wants to be creative, everybody wants to put their stamp on the story and have you ever been in meetings were everybody is in agreement but when you pin people down on exactly what they are agreeing to - it turns out that they are all agreeing to mutually conflicting viewpoints? Could you imagine Frankie giving Greg Bear 10 pages from the Halo Bible and asking him to just add more words to turn those ten pages into a book? Don't add anything new, just pad this out until it is a novel. Of course GB would want to add his own stuff, his own take, his own preferences. And Frankie will have had his own take on the Halo Story. While Frankie was working for Bungie he would have been a junior(?) part of a team and his ideas would have to mesh with the ideas of the other team members. Now Frankie is in a new team, he is interacting with a different set of authors with a different take on the Halo Story so the story will change. I don't think that there was ever a single Halo Story, worked out from the start and completely agreed by all the authors. As a joke(?) Joe told us that JJ said the h2 story was, "The cable: I will cut it!" and "Only blood will pay for this.". Then Joe and co had to turn that into a story. The Halo Bible may or may not exist but, if it does exist, it was never complete and definitive and has itself evolved.
