Yeah, that's certainly one of the ways to look at the Human-Forerunner debate, pre-Halo Cryptum.

Another is that the Forerunner reset their intelligent constructs to recognize Humans in the same manner that they would Forerunner, thus "Reclaimer" and the whole spiel about "You ARE Forerunner."

Or that humans are devolved Forerunner. Or a split-species.

Cryptum's first two chapters make the distinction between Human and Forerunner as separate species, although likely related from a common ancestor, or because they may have been genetically uplifted by the same Precursor civilization... but also complicates the same argument, largely because the two reveal chapters don't discuss a time-frame for the novel in relation to the universe timeline. So they/we might well be the same species but seeded on different worlds, or... well, there's a lot of room for possibilities. January will tell us!
