That is a narrative, it's just in the first person-- what I'm getting from this is that you don't like the style, which is fine, I didn't either at first... : I was expecting something about the Forerunners we've read about : in the Terminals, the enlightened, semi-divine beings that held the Mantle : and fought off the Flood, the shepherds of our galaxy. A picture of the book cover was released a few weeks ago and it has a little description of the book on it (and I think Greg Bear also mentioned some basic things about it that fall along the same lines) so it was put out there that this would be about a younger, less responsible, less experienced Forerunner. : What we get (thus far, I'll acknowledge. Things might pick up later) is a : disjointed first person account of some bum who hangs out on the beach : with a chimpanzee and the caveman from Land of the Lost. I didn't like that characters at first either... : I've heard great things about his work but I've not had the chance to read : any of it yet. I'll admit, it may read better when I've had some rest, but : this was just my first impression. I felt that there were too many plot : elements introduced, hinted at, and casually mentioned with little to no : exposition on what they meant or their importance. something that happens a lot in Halo, come to think of it-- get going, we'll explain later : The characters felt off to me, like things that don't belong in Halo. The : way the dialogue is written seems...I don't know how to put it. It just : comes off as badly written fan-fiction to me. It didn't come off fan-fictiony to me but clichéd, and I'm not sure why as it doesn't seem too similar to anything I remember reading. The "but" coming to finish the sentences that trailed off is that after the first two or three pages, or about when it stopped switching between exposition and current happenings, the more I heard about the characters, especially in their own words, the more I warmed to them. The style still seems a bit distant for me, for lack of a better word, but it closed in a little, and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a little bit more intimate, right in the zone where I like it best, and that along with characters I can get behind and some pretty tantalizing information spells a book that I'd like to read.
