That would be the best thing ever, exploring Elite depression in a Halo game. "Hold X to roll over and go back to sleep." "Objective: finish a sandwich." Or the Flood attack and all around you, your squad members are sighing, dropping their weapons, and lying down on the ground as the horde overtakes them.

Um, anyway, I guess I felt the most grimness from ODST, but only because I started with a false impression that my team was dead—that I was picking up clues of where they'd been but also how they'd met their fates, and that I alone would walk out of the city or maybe meet my own end. It was strangely disappointing when they all turned out to be alive. "What's the matter, Rook? Aren't you glad to see us?" "...No, honestly."

Aside from that, the most genuine grimdark feeling came from Halo 2 for me; even with all the wisecracking and the awesome moment of the Hunters joining the Elites' side (LOL WHOOPS NEVER MIND in Halo 3!), it still felt like everything was going straight to Hell around me. I was unclear how screwed Earth had been by the slipspace rupture, High Charity was getting overrun, there were Flood spores just disgustingly floating around eveyrwhere, I feel like I'm barely even a pawn in that massive Sentinel Wall fight, and then I leave Cortana behind! My only buddy! Despite Chief's bravado with his last line, I kind of felt like he was in no position to boast; I fully expected Halo 3 to have the rings actually fire, and maybe—MAYBE—a few people would make it out alive somehow. Ah well. And in Halo: CE at least you had that sense of wonder and discovery and so on to mitigate the hopeless feeling; in 2 it's like nothing impresses you anymore. "Oh, another Halo. Welp, time to shoot some people."
