I could see those principles useful in a particular situation: when two players are together with a large disparity in levels/experience. If he can keep close enough to concentrate fire but far apart enough to avoid area effect weapons, then the less-experienced player could benefit from the more-experienced player's choices of routes and tactics. The lead doesn't have to worry so much about where the follower is, because as you say, it's the follower's responsibility to keep up. The follower doesn't have to worry so much about tactics, as he just follows the leader's lead.
