: In the air, we had a general rule that the wing holds as close to his lead as
: possible while staying outside the radius of a tank explosion. The same
: sort of idea might be applied on the ground, although one wonders whether
: the distance you'd need to avoid, say, rockets, might not put you so far
: apart as to make coordination difficult.

: Another principle was that it is solely the responsibility of the wing to
: stay with his partner. The lead, being 1) busy with other things, such as
: actually planning out where you're going, and 2) unable to see you without
: looking back, is unable to worry about unit cohesion. So the wing has to
: keep tight, and we had some verbal commands to help him a little (for
: instance to hold the lead up for a moment, letting the wing close the gap
: some more).

: One final thing worth thinking about is division of responsibility. A
: somewhat simple but effective way of organizing the two-person unit is to
: basically have one guy tend to do one thing and the other doing something
: else. For instance, one Banshee might stay mostly high while the other
: stayed mostly low, or one might hover and bombard while the other
: dismounted and dropped a rocket. If this sort of thing, or a set of them,
: could be planned out and agreed-upon in advance, you'd know what you're
: doing before the engagement began, and issues of real-time tactical
: coordination would be alleviated.

I could see those principles useful in a particular situation: when two players are together with a large disparity in levels/experience. If he can keep close enough to concentrate fire but far apart enough to avoid area effect weapons, then the less-experienced player could benefit from the more-experienced player's choices of routes and tactics. The lead doesn't have to worry so much about where the follower is, because as you say, it's the follower's responsibility to keep up. The follower doesn't have to worry so much about tactics, as he just follows the leader's lead.
