I don't keep up on this stuff much... but there's someone here who : would disagree with you. ;) It was always assumed to be an aesthetically pleasing spiral, but observations have suggested otherwise. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milky_way At ~262144 LY distant, the Milky Way is the only galaxy that would appear that large in the sky. And it is structurally as accurate as our reference material. Excluding, of course, our extra-galactic sources.
