From previous discussion and comparing the relative position of The : Ark to the galaxy visible at The Cartographer (end of 'The Ark' level; a : galaxy which notably looks completely different to the one in the sky) it : seems quite likely that the galaxy in the sky is in fact a completely : different galaxy. If for no other reason, The Ark is likely to face away : from the Milky Way (to shield it from the rings when they fire). : Additionally, the Milky Way isn't a barred-spiral galaxy; it's a : logarithmic spiral. : I wrote some more about this previously, but I think my screenshots don't : really convey the way The Ark appears on the 3D holographic image of the : nearby galaxy very well. Maybe a short movie clip would help here. Some math courtesy of the Chandra space telescope folks: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/scale_distance.html If we are 262,144 light-years from the object, and it takes up ~20 degrees of the sky, then it must be ~92,000 light-years in diameter. I haven't measured the galaxy from The Ark, but I don't think it takes up anywhere near that amount of the sky. So, in fact it's even too small to be the Milky Way. This definitely precludes any other galaxy; the next most distant is Andromeda at 2.5 million light-years. From Earth Andromeda takes up ~7 degrees, although most of that is invisible from the ground (being too dim). Andromeda is therefore out. So, it must be the Milky Way, and we may make allowances for its tiny angular size by supposing that most of the outer regions are invisible through the atmosphere.
