In Response To: Re: Astronomic sleuthing (Bigger *SP*!) (Louis Wu) : Well... in the Map Room cutscene, MC says "That's... our galaxy. We're : beyond the rim!" and Spark answers "Two to the eighteenth light : years from galactic center, to be precise." : Seems like if it WASN'T the Milky Way, he'd have said so, no? : (Of course, the galaxy shown in the cutscene doesn't look exactly like the
This was my first impression while playing through the Ark: I looked to the sky and saw a galaxy, but not the Milky Way because in my mind the Milky Way doesn't look like that. That's not what the image of the Milky Way has been for years... When I hear the Marine say "Is that..." I assume he was going to say "Is that a another galaxy?" before he was cut off. Then, at the map with Guilty Spark, I see a picture of a galaxy that I clearly recognize as the Milky Way. But first impressions may not mean everything... At the map, Guilty Spark says that the Ark was 2^18 light years from galactic center. The diameter of our galaxy is approximately 100,000 light years at it's widest part, so let's assume there are 50,000 light years from galactic center to one side of the galaxy. 2^28 light years is 262,144 light years, which means the Ark is over 200,000 light years away from the Milky Way. Galaxy NGC 1300 is 70 million light years away. I'm not sure, but if the Ark was 69,800,000 light years away from NGC 1300 I don't think it would be so visible. Another barred galaxy contender could be NGC 6822, but it's an irregular barred galaxy and doesn't look quite like NGC 1300. Plus it doesn't have any name references I can see. Anyone know how the Milky Way would look 262,144 light years from galactic center? Or how close one would have to be to a galaxy to view it like it's seen at the beginning of the Ark? -SR
