In Response To: Astronomic sleuthing (minor *SP*) (Louis Wu) : RVideo did a little research, and found some pictures from NASA's Astronomy : Picture of the Day archive that seem to be a decent match for a couple of : the images in Halo 3. Click on the image below for a large version (his : notes , including names and locations, are intriguing). : : Yes, I know that the consensus is that that bar galaxy is actually the Milky
: One last point: for one to be able to view the NGC 1300 galaxy to such
After doing some sleuthing of my own, I determined that the general consensus for the size of the Milky Way galaxy is roughly 180,000-200,000 light years across. So that's about 2 x 10^5 light years. If the Ark is approximately 2 x 10^18 light years away from the galactic center, that's over ten trillion times the diameter of the Milky Way! Hmm...not only are we beyond the Milky Way, but apparently a ways past NGC 1300, and even the edge of the observable universe. Light has *only* had 13.6 or so billion years to reach us, making those stars at the "beginning" of the universe the farthest ones we can see. Meanwhile the Ark is sitting well beyond this line, though it's surmised that the universe is infinite so we're still somewhat within the realm of reason in that regard. With the ability to travel *this* far through space and time, I really hope the Forerunner are still around--while they may have lost plenty of their kind in the Milky Way, who's to say that the Shield installations could have saved some people and are well outside the realm of observable space, or that some couldn't have left to go to other galaxies? If these numbers are correct, they could be in NGC 1300 for all we know ;)
