RVideo did a little research, and found some pictures from NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day archive that seem to be a decent match for a couple of the images in Halo 3. Click on the image below for a large version (his notes , including names and locations, are intriguing). Yes, I know that the consensus is that that bar galaxy is actually the Milky Way. I am not (and he is not) putting these images forward as fact - just interesting speculation. You've got to admit, the name matches between these items (which were the closest visual matches he could find in several thousand images) and Halo-related locations/names seems too great to be coincidental... One last point: for one to be able to view the NGC 1300 galaxy to such magnitude with the naked eye, in the sky, you would literally have to be far outside the Milky Way, just as described in the game's narrative.
