In Response To: Re: Holy shit Bungie..... (cherdman) Ok, as someone currently on-track for going into this exact field, I have some things to say: The texture of the E3 armor was beautiful, magnificent, a hellacious resource user, and completely wrong. A texutre that deep gives the wrong impression about the material density and weight of the armor. It looked HEAVY in the E3 trailer. I always hoped they'd give it a more realistic rough-ceramic finish with a light matte finish over it (refractive coating isn't smooth, but is in fact flat-matte), with real-time damage factored in, of course. Think very closely about how the armor was described in the books and what sort of materials, weights, textures, densities, light reflective potential (because it is militarily unsound too put a special-ops super elite soldier in a BIG SHINY SUIT OF ARMOR THAT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE TO HIDE), and the appearance of being refined by a futuristic military. Consider this as well: This suit will not feature three years or whatever's worth of damage. The chief has already changed suits once, who's to say he won't do it again and get a new suit for Halo 3? The suit in the new shot may newer or, as general consensus says the new screenshot is similar to H2, maybe this darker armor is the old armor and the E3 trailer features his new armor. Another thing: Bungie likes to tease us with tidbits but also wants to blow our minds with the final product. They've been intensly secretive about campaign and I don't think they're going to be showing us anything that resembles what we'll behold on the 25th. Even the new screenshots of the multiplayer, which is very public now, are over a month old. This current shot is CAMPAIGN, the lock-and-keyed baby dinosaur that Bungie is holding onto with the tightest of grips so the world doesn't get a premature peek. Using this logic, how "new" do you REALLY think this campaign shot is? The armor in this picture doesn't even hold up to the multiplayer beta armor in terms of detail. The only thing that seems refined is the visor and let me explain one thing: if you don't want a shiny suit, you also don't want a shiny mirror for a face. That's just bad planning. A semi-opaque visor that absorbs sunlight instead of reflecting it makes more sense. Think of "Enemy at the Gates" and "Sving Private Ryan" where people get sniped because of the light reflection off their rifle scopes. Now, imagine that instead of a rifle scope, that shiny thing is your WHOLE FACE. A mirror-finish visor is flat-out illogical for a soldier. You want the visor, and the armor as a whole, to absord and disperse light so you can better hide in any range of light. Compare the detail of the armor, hands, armor texture on the gaunlets, and even the gun detail to the Beta and you'll realize that this model of MC is actually probably pretty old. What about the environment, you say? I see lots of problems with the environment indicative of an early development cycle. Anti-aliasing and clipping with the trees as well as the light filtering in on the foliage from the wrong angle, flat multi-layered cloud textures as opposed to true volumetric clouds (though this only makes sense, because other than I, who actually pays attention to clouds?), and an over-aggressive use of atmospheric perspective that forgets to switch from light cobalt to teal at the mid-point of the mountain. Am I saying the screenshot is bad? No. It looks freakin' fantastic. But there are things in it that need polish, which Bungie has recently been doing, making me think that this shot is older than we think and that the final product will be MUCH better. Also, to you real-time reflection comparison nitpickers, please take notice, because nobody but nobody has mentioned the fact that, despite the lack of ambient reflective light (amber, it would seem) on the armor, there is a GIANT EXPLOSION BEING REFLECTED IN HIS VISOR. Has nobody noticed this? Sorry for any typos, as I'm sure there are, but I just got back from a long day of driving across-state and I'm tired. Too tired too proofread after my rant. Please also note: I'm cranky when I'm tired.
