In Response To: Re: Halo Wars Q and A interview (AfroRyan)

: I mean, sure, it's a lot of info, but you would think if they were
: such "fans," that a good portion of the team would have read
: one, if not all three of the Halo novels (and the graphic novel for that
: matter).

Erm... It's not that they haven't read the books properly, you haven't.

: If they had done that, the whole battle rifle problem probably wouldn't have
: come to pass. I guess we should be glad there weren't any Brutes, huh?

Yeah, the battle rifle was a slight oops, I'm not sure why that happened and unfortunately neither bungie or ensemble will tell us. Heh.

: Another thing that scares me (from the trailer) is that the whole idea of
: there being a huge squadron of Spartans just ready to fight the Covies.
: The novels tell us that the Spartans were created to fight humans on
: opposing colonies...so why in the world would you send a bunch of Spartans
: to some frozen wasteland with no known threat when they should be out
: stopping uprisings in rebel colonies?

Watch the trailer again please. Count the spartans. Seriously. Count the huge amount of spartans in the trailer. Keeping in mind the spartans are the green ones.

Also, I would hazard a guess that given the sheer amount of humans on that planet means that this is after the first encounter and they are fighting to save this planet. The Elites are only rumoured to exist, and while they uncloak to look cool in that trailer who say's they stay uncloaked when the humans rock up in the warthog?

The spartans also don't work as a huge group. They stick together out side of missions but when it comes to missions they all tend to get split up and moved to seperate areas. The Jericho Seven mission had four spartans. The Cote d'Azur mission had eight spartans split into two groups of four with separate objectves and even the mission on the asteroid before they got the mjolinir prototype was completed with five of them. These are just the missions we are told about. Chances are extremely high that while they were doing those misisons the other spartans where in the same situation on other planets, for example I bet the five spartans (Funny, where did I get that from? *cough*) on the ice planet in the trailer are an example of another squad on another mission. I bet that's not even supposed to be John either :P

: Off topic with the discussion at hand...but about the whole "Covenant,
: maybe" situation...It's my opinion that they would work best NOT
: against the humans, but choose a route more akin to Halo 2, having the
: player fight the Flood when they have to play as the Covenant. We know the
: Covies knew of the Flood before Halo, so maybe they've fought them before.

Alot of people are debating the possibility of the other parts of halo as not being canon and yet there isn't actually much about any of them that actually conflict. Infact each of the seperate parts seem to tell a different perspective of the same storyline. ILB was earth and it fit with the mention of the book that earth was blissfully ignorant of how bad the covenant was kicking human ass.

The graphic novel also appears to tie in quite tightly with the mention of the spartan one project mentioned in the book and ILB's even going as far as suggesting that our friend Sargeant Johnston was a Spartan one. Some view this as people re-writing canon as they see fit without realising that perhaps it was done deliberately to make you think more about why sarge so conveniently survived the flood.

Bungie tend to be rather cagey about what is and isn't canon, but I'll guess that if it was not canon that it would not exist. What probably happened is that the initial halo bible was the base document but instead of being locked down as an unchanging document for all time, it gets expanded and refreshed as more ideas surface and get refined. Having said this I'm probably bungies ideal fan because instead of bickering about what breaks what, I'll find my own ways to see how they all tie in to each other and that's half the fun for me.

ILB, HGN, Books, Games. It's all the same canon to me.
