Well, sure, you can have that policy. The effects of it will be to have a "smaller" universe - less stuff to play with within "canon." Taken to its extreme, you get the inverse of the fanfiction example you mentioned, where NOTHING is canon except for the Halo games themselves (and maybe even just Halo 1, if there's a conflict like Sarge living). Obviously, both are unfruitful extremes. As far as I'm concerned, the goal should be to have as "rich" (large, expansive, etc.) universe as is practical and aesthetically pleasing. For my money, that doesn't include fanfiction because there's too much to keep track of (impractical), it tends to be highly contradictory (both with the games and with other fanfiction), and, frankly, much fanfiction isn't aesthetically pleasing (to me). I guess, for me, it's a question of where to draw the line, and denying everything before allowing it strikes me as too narrow. Where's the fun? |
