Re: Maxwell equation use inferior in the Covenant?

In Response To: Re: Maxwell equation use inferior in the Covenant? (Exiled Zealot)

The engineers as portrayed are pretty similar to the Phfor Compilers from Marathon.

They fix things, but they don't design things. They are also a discrete species in the Covenant, rather than a profession within one or more of the races.

There is every indication that part of the reason that the Covenant are dependent on each other and on Forerunner technology is because they lacked their own. It may be that each race inherited, perhaps abandoned on their homeworld, various Forerunner technologies they did not understand completely but could use after a fashion.

That would explain quite a lot.

: Here's a good description of them at the Halo library:

: Now when they first appeared in Fall of Reach, one dismantled a car and put
: it back together at lightning speeds, according to the Spartans watching
: from the sewers. IMO, engineers are the first creatures to be encountered
: in the entire universe, that actually behave like computers.

: Contrary to popular belief, and computer cannot think or comprehend. A
: computer is not creative. It can only do the operation it's been
: programmed with minus the understanding of it's operation. The engineer's
: operation is a broad one; taking apart and building technology, but it's
: probably SO autonomic for them, they pay no heed to how they do it (or who
: they do it for, as they demonstrated in First Strike...one repaired John's
: armor).

: So, if these engineers aren't creative, than there should be no evolution in
: tech, which of course is true. That's one possibility anyway.
