In Response To: Re: Neither have you, (Count Zero)

: An even simpler explanation- Multiple Pelicans. IAC had at least 3 on board,
: and probably several more we didn't see.

Why would they bother?

Your mission is to secure the index and prevent it getting into enemy hands. 1st objective: get to it first so travel light and fast. 2nd objective: destroy it or do something to keep it from the Covenant.

They didn't want to activate the ring so their best bet would have been to destroy it.

You can't keep it from the Covenant by fortifying a part of the Halo because there are too many Covenant and you will recieve no reinforcements; in time they will wear you down.

They could try running away. IAC could probably fly right in close to the Library, they could try a random vector slipstream escape or detonate its reactors if they were going to be captured.

Perhaps the most certain way to prevent the Halo activation would have been to deploy nukes on the Halo or, if necessary, use IAc's reactors to destroy it. We know that the index can't activate the Halo if it is in pieces :-)

It would be tantamount to suicide but we are talking about the survival of everybody else in the Galaxy. and since IAC was on the Halo there would have been nothing that the Covenant could have done to prevent its detonation.

This prompts another question. The Covenant would have had strong reason to suspect that there was an Earth ship on or near the ring. Given what tPoA did you would expect that the Covenant would have pulled out all the stops to find it. Forget Regret, he's only a Prophet, the survival of a Holy Ring is more important. That fleet that appeared with HC should have immediately started to scour the ring. They new immediately when Regret died so I assume that someone was in communication with them. even if all they knew was that the Demon was on the ring, this is enough to prompt the obvious question: how did he get there. An Earth ship is one obvious answer. A competant commander would want to either know for sure that he got there some other way or start searching for the ship immediately.

Perhaps Truth would veto a search but he would have to be soooo convincing. He can get away with 'nuking' the temple to prevent the Elites from capturing the Chief but how could he persuade everybody to ignore the real threat posed by IAC? The PoA is recent history and what it did was probably the worst thing that the Covenant have experienced. Would they really want to risk losing another Halo?
