I can't find the links anymore, but there are TONS of different types of automatic intrusion detection systems that infantry can take on the battlefield. The ones I've heard most about are body capacitance detectors (same effect as when you touch an antenna) and infrared "fences", though there's probably more sophisticated ones these days. It'd make perfect sense to set one up behind you before going into the Sentinel Wall. In the Marines' case, they probably expected Covenant coming in behind and wanted these set up to give advanced warning that they were being followed. And then the Flood came in... -- Steve wishes he'd stayed current... he can't even find his way around janes.com anymore. :(
